“Congratulations. Indeed you have two heads!” Those were the words of Caleb Asan, one of the first to react after Zainab Abdulsalam announced her graduation from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. For many Nigerians, this familiar expression is more than just a compliment—it’s a playful nod to the age-old question: how do some students achieve such outstanding results? In Zainab’s case, the answer seems to be a mix of academic grit, leadership, and hands-on professional experience.

In October 2026, Zainab took to LinkedIn to share her remarkable journey as a First Class graduate of Economics, ranking among the top two out of 162 students in her department. Her post wasn’t just a victory lap; it was a heartfelt reflection on the four years that shaped not only her education but her view of the world and her own abilities.

“My undergraduate journey was built on three pillars: academic dedication, student leadership, and practical professional learning,” Zainab wrote. These weren’t just buzzwords—each pillar reflected a chapter of her university story. She poured herself into her coursework, but never let her academic life become a tunnel vision. Beyond the textbooks, Zainab was determined to make her mark in leadership and service.

Her commitment to student leadership was evident throughout her time at UNILORIN. Zainab served as Director of the Economics Students Research Association (ESRA) not once, but twice. For those unfamiliar, ESRA is a pioneering student research group in Nigeria, dedicated to equipping undergraduates with the research and data analysis skills that employers and graduate schools crave. As Director, Zainab organised training sessions on data skills—helping fellow students bridge the gap between theory and real-world application. She didn’t just lead meetings; she supervised the publication of weekly and monthly economics reports, a feat that demanded discipline and teamwork.

But her contributions didn’t stop there. Zainab was also the head of the planning committee for the 10th Annual Economics Students Summit, a flagship event of the Nigerian Economics Students Association (NESA) at UNILORIN. Under her leadership, the summit reached a significant milestone: the launch of its first Legacy Project, designed to leave a lasting impact on the economics student community. She managed everything from strategy to budgeting and sponsorship—skills not always taught in the classroom but critical for life beyond university walls.

Her leadership and dedication did not go unnoticed. NESA Unilorin honoured Zainab with the Volunteer of the Year award, a recognition reserved for those whose service has made a true difference. “Her energy and vision elevated every project she touched,” said Victoria Nwahiri, a fellow NESA member. “She inspired a lot of us to do more, to think bigger.”

Even as she juggled academics and extracurriculars, Zainab made time for professional development. She completed an advisory internship with KPMG Nigeria, working in their Internal Audit and Governance, Risk and Compliance Services unit. This experience gave her a taste of the corporate world before she even graduated, exposing her to industry standards and expectations.

She was also proactive about building her skills portfolio. Zainab earned certifications in accounting fundamentals, financial modelling and valuation, Excel proficiency, and reading financial statements—concrete skills that set her apart in a crowded job market. And she didn’t stop there: Zainab took part in training programmes with global names like JPMorgan Chase, Forage, and Internship Experience UK, broadening her horizons and preparing herself for opportunities beyond Nigeria.

When she finally shared her graduation news online, the response was overwhelming. Sodiq Suleiman, a fellow UNILORIN graduate, commented, “Wowww!!! Well done, Zainab. So proud of youuuuu!” Others echoed the sentiment, flooding her post with warm congratulations and encouragement. “Your journey shows the power of resilience and focus,” wrote Aminat Yusuf. “You’re an inspiration to every Nigerian student who dreams big.”

Looking ahead, Zainab is setting her sights even higher. In her LinkedIn announcement, she stated she’s open to graduate opportunities in investment banking, advisory, and compliance. Her story is a timely reminder that excellence isn’t just about grades—it’s about impact, vision, and a willingness to take on new challenges.

Zainab Abdulsalam’s journey is proof that with hard work, leadership, and a drive for practical learning, Nigerian students can rise above challenges and stand out on both the national and international stage. For every student dreaming of making their mark, her story rings loud and clear: you don’t need two heads—just the courage to pursue your goals with everything you’ve got.
